How to Design Your Bed
A step-by-step guide to creating your ideal sleep environment in our bed configurator.
Designing your bed is about balancing ergonomics, aesthetics and everyday functionality. Follow the steps below to configure a bed that fits both your body and your interior.
Step 1 – Choose Your Mattress Size
Start with the foundation: proportion and comfort.
Your mattress size determines both how the bed feels and how it sits within the room.
Consider:
• Room dimensions and spatial flow
• Whether you sleep alone or share the bed.
• Desired sense of spaciousness.
Step 2 – Select Your Fabric
Define the character of your bedroom.
The upholstery shapes the bed’s architectural presence. Lighter textiles add softness and airiness, making your space feel more open and inviting. On the other hand, darker or textured fabrics add depth and contrast, enhancing the overall warmth and character.
Consider:
• Wall colour and flooring.
• Natural light in the room.
• Longevity and maintenance needs.
Design tip: Neutrals offer timelessness. Textured weaves add tactility without overpowering the space.
Step 3 – Choose Mattress Firmness
Personal comfort is essential. Firmness affects spinal alignment, pressure relief and overall sleep ergonomics.
The firmness of the mattress you need depends on various factors such as sleeping position, body composition, and personal preferences.
If two people share the bed, individual firmness options can be combined.
Step 4 – Add a Mattress Topper
The topper fine-tunes comfort and surface sensation.
It can:
• Enhance pressure relief.
• Improve breathability.
• Adjust overall firmness perception.
Step 5 – Select a Headboard
Create presence and structure.
The headboard frames the bed visually and adds architectural clarity to the room.
Consider:
• Ceiling height.
• Desired statement level (subtle vs expressive).
• Functional needs (e.g., comfort when sitting up).
A taller headboard adds vertical emphasis. A slimmer design creates a minimal silhouette.
Step 6 – Choose Your Bed Legs
Complete the look from the ground up.
The bed legs add the finishing touch to your bed’s overall expression, while also influencing its height and visual presence.
Consider:
• The overall style of your bedroom.
• The height and proportions you prefer.
• How the legs complement your chosen fabric and headboard.
Design tip: Choose a finish that complements the other materials and details in your bedroom for a cohesive look.
Step 7 – Add Nightstands
Integrate functionality. Nightstands complete the composition and add practical storage.
Think about:
• Symmetry vs asymmetry
• Storage needs
• Material continuity with other bedroom furniture
Coordinated nightstands create a cohesive look, especially when finished in matching materials.
