A Place to Slow Down: Step into Hanna Östberg's Bedroom Getaway

For interior creator and social media profile Hanna Östberg, home decor and design have always been about creating the right feeling – a space where form, colour and material harmoniously blend. For her new master bedroom, she aimed to achieve a sense of “total relaxation.”

In a grand yet charming turn-of-the-century villa just outside Stockholm, Hanna embraces life with her husband and their four children. The house, beautifully renovated and expanded, radiates warmth and vibrancy. It showcases a captivating blend of classic elegance, British-inspired color schemes, and the essence of Scandinavian simplicity, creating an inspiring haven for family life.

Hanna has been passionate about colour, shapes and forms for as long as she can remember. From a young age, she has developed a rich inner library filled with beautiful visual impressions and memories that continue to inspire her home today.

– One of my earliest and most vivid memories from outside my home dates back to when I was 5 years old. I saw a woman wearing a striped summer dress, and I was captivated by the stunning colours of the dress and how beautiful she looked in it. She seemed like a dream. Since then, I've wanted to create rooms and environments that evoke the same emotions I felt that day.

A Space For Total Relaxation

When designing the bedroom, the emphasis was on creating a peaceful retreat – a space for rest and rejuvenation amid everyday life. With four children between the ages of seven and nineteen, Hanna longed for a more grown-up bedroom (even though youngest daughter, Lilian, still sneaks into their bed from time to time).

Her inspiration came from a trip to Paris, where a thoughtfully decorated guest room left a lasting impression.

– I wanted that classic getaway feeling. When I was 22 or 23, I stayed in a guest bedroom in Paris. After a late night out in the city, I returned to find makeup remover wipes in a lovely package on my pillow. The sheets were luxurious, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. It was such a thoughtful gesture from the host couple. The bedroom we have today doesn’t resemble that guest bedroom, but I wanted to capture that same feeling – the feeling of those little extra touches.

The choice of bed fell on Hällsö Walnut, a floating bed from The Iconic Collection. The bed features a frame made of walnut veneers, and the box spring mattress can be personalised with one of Carpe Diem Beds' many fabrics.

– I wanted a design that deviated from traditional built-in wardrobes. Then there's something about that floating feeling created by the legless design.

Embracing the personal

For Hanna, decorating a bedroom is much about balancing comfort and thoughtfulness. Details like books, soft blankets, and comfortable slippers reinforce the idea that this is a space for rest. And for Hanna, a scented candle is the finishing touch that transforms the room into a true sanctuary.

– Even if you don't have a large bedroom, try to create a place for relaxation. It can be a bench or an armchair. It doesn’t need to be used constantly, but having a peaceful spot where you can unwind. It’s all about providing yourself with that option for a serene escape whenever you need it.

Right now, Hanna is drawn to homes that tell a personal story, rather than striving for perfection. In a household with four children, it’s all about finding that balance between order and lived-in charm.

 – You don't want it to be messy, but cosy and personal! An easy way to create that style is to allow all family members to have a place, including the animals. It's the small, charming details that elevate a home and the nicest compliment I can get is when someone says that our home radiates warmth.
